Dans les observations d'un réseau géodésique, le nombre des équations est souvent supérieur à celui des inconnues. Par suite des erreurs d'observation, la figure constituée n'est pas géométrique; aussi le problème se pose de rechercher un système de corrections à apporter aux quantités observées pour définir un réseau géométrique. Cette condition se traduit par l'existence d'un certain nombre d'équations qui doivent être rigoureusement satisfaites. Ces équations portent le nom d'équations de "condition" ou "équations conditionnelles".
