Either an operator or a digital processor would like to keep the false-alarm rate reasonably constant, having the radar automatically adjust its sensitivity as the intensity of interference varies. Receivers that have this property are called CFAR (constant false-alarm rate) receivers.

L'emploi d'un amplificateur logarithmique suivi d'une différenciation amène une certaine régulation sur le bruit du radar et le clutter, mais cela est limité et pour s'avérer insuffisant dans le cas d'un brouillage intentionnel ou accidentel. On est alors conduit à se servir de récepteurs dits à taux de fausse alarme constant (TFAC) (ou CFAR en anglais, [...]).
