[Babcock and Wilcox Pressurized Water Reactors.] The core barrel is a cylinder with a flange on each end. The upper flange bolts to the lower flange of the core support shield assembly; the lower flange bolts to the lower grid assembly. The grid assemblies provide a grid which holds and supports the fuel assemblies. The core barrel surrounds the fuel in the reactor core. The core barrel also supports the incore instrument guide tubes.

Dans l’ABWR [réacteur à eau bouillante de type avancé], l'eau descend entre la jupe et la cuve, pénètre au centre par des ouvertures et remonte à l'intérieur de la jupe entre les tubes guides. Le haut de la jupe porte un anneau cylindrique massif de 5 m de diamètre et de 4 m de haut : l'enveloppe du cœur (core shroud). La jupe est reliée à la cuve par un anneau horizontal soudé. Cet anneau comporte des ouvertures circulaires pour les pompes de recirculation intégrées.

Outil spécial comprenant à sa base une couronne annulaire munie de molettes ou de diamants et qui, vissée sur la couronne de sondage, permet de prendre une carotte au fond d'un puits en forage.

Composé d'un tube (destiné à recevoir la carotte) qui entraîne une couronne à lames ou à rouleaux (destinée à attaquer le terrain), le carottier est fixé à l'extrémité du train de tiges de forage à la place du trépan; sa rotation permet de découper la quantité voulue de l'échantillon, qui peut atteindre plusieurs mètres, et un système de retenue situé à sa base permet de remonter la carotte.
