David Lewis, chef du parti néodémocrate, utilisa à la Chambre des communes en septembre 1972, pour stigmatiser les grandes sociétés, étrangères ou non, qui veulent plus que leur part du gâteau fiscal et n'éprouvent aucun remords à vivre de la charité publique.

À cette époque, le bureau de M. Lewis avait rendu cette expression par «société parasitaire du régime fiscal».
