Algunos de los privilegios de los diplomáticos consisten en la denominada inmunidad diplomática, esto implica que se encuentran fuera de la jurisdicción criminal y civil del Estado huésped, como también de toda clase de impuestos. Por otro lado, las embajadas son inmunes a las investigaciones aunque se espera que los diplomáticos accedan a éstas en forma voluntaria.
