On trouve dans les déchets urbains, du plastique, des aliments, du papier, du bois, qui lorsque stockés dans une décharge, se décomposent en dégageant des gaz tels que le méthane. Celui-ci sert à produire de l'énergie thermique ou encore de l'électricité. Les déchets peuvent être aussi incinérés pour la productionde chaleur et d'électricité.
