"Finger joint" means a glued joint consisting of a series of interlocking fingers, precision machined on the ends of two pieces of wood to be joined.

L'aboutage consiste à réunir bout à bout des débits bruts ou rabotés en bois de fil de longueurs variables mais de même section. Les extrémités des pièces à assembler sont entaillées en forme de doigts ou de sifflets, ou "entures". Puis les entures de deux éléments sont encollées et assemblées entre elles par pression pour réaliser un élément de grande longueur ayant une bonne résistance mécanique.
