Under many national-level clean-air regulations, power plants and other facilities are required to use flue gas treatments to reduce the amount of emitted pollutants. Such approaches, which use devices such as electrostatic precipitators and scrubbers, can successfully remove 90 percent or more of certain pollutants.

La technique la plus courante dans le traitement des gaz de combustion consiste à utiliser de la chaux sèche en tant que réactif de stabilisation/solidification. La chaux est utilisée avec les résidus de cendres et forme une substance semblable à du ciment. Une autre alternative consiste toutefois à recycler et réutiliser les résidus, et notamment les cendres volantes, les cendres de charbon et de résidus de perchlorate d'ammonium.
