Les herbicides foliaires ou à action foliaire, appliqués sur les parties aériennes des végétaux à combattre, détruisent ces végétaux en nécrosant les tissus qu'ils atteignent (herbicides foliaires de contact). Ils peuvent aussi être absorbés par la partie de plante sur laquelle ils sont appliqués. Véhiculés dans la plante, ils peuvent ainsi exercer une action phytotoxique en d'autres parties de la mauvaise herbe (herbicides foliaires de la translocation ou à action interne).
