Any one of the three food chambers in the digestive tract of ruminant animals immediately proximal to the abomasum or true stomach. They are the rumen, reticulum, and omasum.

The term is usually used in the plural, referring collectively to all three chambers. When a specific chamber is intended, the specific name for that chamber is used.

La digestion et la fermentation bactérienne, la macération physique par les contractions mécaniques des parois stomacales sont les deux principales fonctions des préestomacs; ces deux fonctions sont interdépendantes. Ainsi le trouble éprouvé par l'une provoque des anomalies chez l'autre. La fonction motrice étant la plus aisément mise en évidence, c'est donc la motricité du rumen qui est utilisée comme indicateur de la fonction digestive des ruminants.
