Fuzzy Sets. In our natural language and description of the universe that surrounds us we often come in contact with classes of objects which do not have a precisely defined criteria of memberships. For example, if we consider "the class of tall people", "the class of beautiful women", or "the class of numbers which are much greater than one", ambiguity arises with respect to memberships.... The concept to be explored here is that of a fuzzy set, a class or set with a continuum of grades of membership. These fuzzy sets constitute a natural generalization of classical sets in that a continuous rather than binary membership function is applied.... 2, record 1, English, - fuzzy%20set

The theory of fuzzy sets has been applied in classification problems where a non-exclusive assignment of patterns to classes is desired. If the classes do not have precisely defined criteria of membership, then the concept of a membership function with value between 0 and 1 is a useful characterization. Rather than probabilistically assigning a pattern to one class or another but not both simultaneously, a fuzzy classifier would provide the degree of membership of a pattern to each of the classes. 3, record 1, English, - fuzzy%20set
