On distingue principalement deux méthodes de reconnaissance de mots. L'une basée sur la reconnaissance des sons élémentaires (les phonèmes) est appelée «reconnaissance analytique». L'autre, sans reconnaissance de phonèmes, est appelée «globale» : elle est basée sur la comparaison directe du signal à des descriptions en termes de modèles acoustiques, de mots ou séquences de mots.
