Lorsque le milieu de transport se décante, les matériaux les plus gros atteignent le fond avant les plus fins. Aussi trouve-t-on, dans les sédiments qui apparaissent, les matériaux les plus grossiers à la base et les plus petits à la partie haute du dépôt. C'est ce qu'on appelle le classement vertical progressif ou granuloclassement.
