Avec le butadiène, on obtient des polystyrènes choc dans lesquels les nodules de polybutadiène (élastomère) jouent le rôle d'amortisseur et remédient à la mauvaise résistance au choc du polystyrène cristal. Le polystyrène choc est légèrement opaque, mais résiste au choc jusqu'à -40°C. Sa résistance chimique est légèrement inférieure à celle du polystyrène classique; il vieillit plus vite.
