If a magma crystallizes to give some large crystals in a groundmass of much finer crystals or glass, the large crystals are called phenocrysts; it is usually supposed that the phenocrysts grew large while the magma was subterranean, and that rise of the magma to the surface later provoked quick, fine crystallization of the material between the phenocrysts.

Si un magma cristallise en donnant de très grands cristaux dans une pâte soit vitreuse, soit faite de cristaux beaucoup plus petits, les grands cristaux prennent le nom de phénocristaux; on considère généralement que les phénocristaux ont atteint cette grande taille tandis que le magma était encore en profondeur, et que la montée de ce magma a entraîné la cristallisation rapide des éléments entre les phénocristaux.

Les phénocristaux de quartz [...] sont des prismes bipyramidés souvent corrodés ou éclatés. Les phénocristaux de feldspaths sont souvent représentés par la sanidine [...] d'aspect craquelé, transparent alors que ceux d'orthose sont en général d'un blanc laiteux.
