Le temps de séjour d'un effluent dans une installation de lagunage naturel est sans doute le paramètre essentiel; dans le cas des lagunes à microphytes, il traduit en fait les conditions de durée nécessaire à la prise en compte de la charge organique par les bactéries en suspension : il doit être de 60 jours dans le cas d'un traitement intégral, de 30 jours dans le cas d'un traitement complémentaire (Lagunage naturel et lagunage aéré, 1981, p. 36).
