L'IL-5 favorise la réponse des cellules T et B à l'IL-2 en induisant la chaîne alpha du récepteur à l'IL-2. Ainsi, elle favorise la production des lymphocytes T cytotoxiques. L'IL-5 est plus particulièrement produite par les cellules CD4+ de type TH2, sous-population de lymphocytes T CD4+ qui sécrètent l'IL-4 et l'IL-5 et qui favorisent les réponses anticorps.
