On colle le papier essentiellement pour le rendre résistant à la pénétration des solutions aqueuses. Le collage permet aussi d'améliorer les caractéristiques de surface et certaines propriétés physiques de la feuille. Le papetier dispose de deux grandes méthodes pour coller le papier : le collage dans la masse et le collage en surface. Pour le collage dans la masse, on utilise de la colophane ou d'autres agents de collage pour modifier l'angle de contact entre l'eau et les fibres, ce qui a pour effet de réduire la pénétration de l'eau.
