The process, known as karyotyping, compares chromosomes by shape, length, the pattern of light and dark bands visible on the chromosomes and other characteristics. Karyotyping helps primatologists determine the exact taxonomic borders between subspecies in the wild - divisions that bear importantly on determining which spider monkeys will be brought aboard the new ark and how they will be bred.
