Aujourd'hui, on place des lanterneaux sur les toitures en terrasse de façon à obtenir un éclairage zénithal des locaux placés en dessous (ateliers, garages, bureaux, etc.).

Le ROBER 1985 (v. 5, page 951) considère «lanterneau» comme vieilli dans ce sens et renvoie au terme «lanternon», ce qui va à l'encontre de l'observation ci-dessus et n'est corroboré par aucune des autres sources consultées.

Lanterneaux surélevés. Les lanterneaux sont les parties surélevées du comble dont l'axe coïncide avec le faîtage. Ils ont pour but de faciliter l'aération du bâtiment. Les faces verticales [...] sont appelées piédroits; l'appel d'air se fait par les ouvertures de ces faces verticales, qui peuvent [...] être complètement ouvertes ou garnies de persiennes ou de châssis vitrés avec parties ouvrantes. Les rampants [...] sont le plus souvent vitrés.

Noter que par extension de sens à la suite de l'évolution du concept, le terme "lanterneau" en est venu à désigner aussi, surtout en Europe, tout dispositif constituant une prise de jour en toiture.
