The layer that lies immediately above the physical layer in the Open Systems Interconnection protocol model. The link layer provides for the reliable transfer of information across the physical media. It is subdivided into the data link sub-layer and the media access control sub-layer.

This layer performs the function of taking data from the higher layers, creating packets, and sending them accurately out through the physical layer.

Couche située immédiatement au-dessus de la couche physique du modèle de référence d'interconnexion de systèmes ouverts. La couche liaison permet le transfert fiable d'informations sur les supports physiques. Elle est subdivisée en deux sous-couches : la sous-couche liaison de données et la cous-couche commande d'accès au support.

Le modèle OSI (Open Systems Interconnect). Ce modèle édité par l'ISO (International Standard Organisation) normalise le comportement externe de toute machine informatique organisée en réseau de communication. La structure de référence comporte 7 niveaux fonctionnels hiérarchisés. [...] Niveau 2 : couche liaison. Le niveau précédent rend la transmission transparente au niveau du bit. Cette deuxième couche organise la communication sous la forme de blocs définis de bits (appelés trames), détecte et corrige les erreurs de transmission du niveau 1.
