L'origine des tumeurs à cellules lipidiques de l'ovaire est incertaine et ce terme regroupe en fait un ensemble hétérogène de tumeurs, à larges cellules polyédriques ressemblant tantôt à des cellules de Leydig, tantôt à des cellules lutéales, tantôt à des cellules surrénaliennes, c'est pourquoi on pense qu'elles pourraient se développer aux dépens de reliquats surrénaliens.
