CONT

Native to South China, Lychee is an attractive glossy leafed evergreen tree growing 25 to 40 feet. The tree grows compactly with a nice round top and spreading branches. It is related to the Goldenrain tree and the akee fruit tree. Lychee develops small green-white flowers which grow in panicles close to 12 inches long in June or July in South Florida. These panicles then produce very tasty edible 'nuts' borne in large, red clusters.

CONT

DEF

The fruit of [the litchi], usually eaten dried or preserved: it consists of a single seed surrounded by a sweet, edible, raisinlike pulp, enclosed in a rough, brown, papery shell.

OBS

In a few days the fruits dehydrate naturally, the outer skin becomes brown and brittle, and the flesh becomes dry and shriveled like a raisin, somewhat musky in flavor. Because of this tendency, the fruits became known as "lychee nuts." This is a misunderstanding. They are not nuts, and the seed is not edible.

CONT

OBS

Pluriel : litchis.
