Catalytic filtration. The manganese contained in the water can be oxidized by the dissolved oxygen in the water alone provided the reaction is catalysed; for this purpose the water is filtered through a material rich in manganese dioxide such as a manganese ore, or through sand covered with a layer of manganese dioxide.

There are several manganese oxides, the commonest being MnO2 (pyrolusite).

A glauconitic sand is frequently present at the base of the [manganese] ore layer which consists of irregular concretions, nodules, and rounded earthy masses of manganese oxide and/or carbonate in a silty or clayey matrix. ... The dominant minerals of the oxide zone are pyrolusite and psilomelane.
