Les chercheurs du Microwave Research Center de Marlborough (New Hampshire) ont entrepris de tester sur eux-mêmes, le chauffage aux micro-ondes. Une source de ces ondes, d'une puissance de 800 watts et semblable à celle d'un four de commerce, a été encastrée dans un mur, et la pièce a été tapissée de différents dispositifs de réflexion des ondes. Ces cobayes humains ont constaté qu'ils obtenaient une atmosphère confortable avec un flux d'ondes «plusieurs centaines de fois inférieur à celui qui règne dans un four standard», ce qui déboucherait sur une économie d'environ 25% par rapport à un chauffage électrique conventionnel. Ils reconnaissent toutefois qu'il sera difficile de convaincre le public de l'innocuité d'un tel système.
