Les "mixed-borders" sont disposées sur une largeur de 3 à 4 m, à la manière d'un puzzle, dont les taches de couleurs enchevêtrées, dissymétriques, s'allongeant les unes dans les autres, sont faites surtout de plantes vivaces aux coloris très étudiés. Mais les bordures herbacées vivaces, qui font l'admiration des visiteurs en Grande-Bretagne, en Hollande, sont d'un effet moins assuré en France, en raison des floraisons écourtées chez de nombreuses espèces pérennes, surtout pendant les étés chauds et secs.
