A lock case inclosed in a space cut inside a door edge.

CONT

This lock mechanism is designed to fit into a cavity in the door … It usually consists of a latch mechanism and an opening device (knob, lever, etc.). Older mortise locks have only the latch to hold the door closed, while other mortise locks have a bolt or bar (tang).
