Any of various usually nocturnal lepidopteran insects with antennae that are often feathery, with a stouter body, duller coloring, and proportionately smaller wings than the butterflies, and with larvae that are plant-eating caterpillars.

Les papillons de nuit se distinguent des papillons de jour par leurs antennes filiformes ou plumeuses. La plupart des espèces sont nocturnes. L'envergure d'ailes de ces papillons varie d'un peu plus de 3 mm chez certaines mineuses des feuilles 20 cm chez l'Atlas d'Asie. Le Cécropia, apparenté à ce dernier, a une envergure de 12 cm et est le plus gros papillon de nuit au Canada.

OBS

L'une des plus grandes familles, celle des Noctuidés ou noctuelles compte plusieurs espèces dont les chenilles appelées vers-gris ont une grande importance économique.
