La secreción de moco es un elemento del sistema de defensa de las vías respiratorias. El aumento de la secreción se produce como consecuencia de la modificación del epitelio respiratorio, como adaptación al daño provocado por la acción de distintos estímulos (irritantes químicos, infecciones, partículas, entre otros), con proliferación de células epiteliales y diferenciación posterior de células especializadas en la producción de moco.
