Dans le contexte de l'adoption locale, «enfant plus âgé» désigne tout enfant de deux ou trois ans et plus, mais il n'est pas courant d'apporter cette précision. On parle simplement de l'adoption d'un enfant, et si une précision s'impose, on se contente d'ajouter l'âge. (Renseignement obtenu du Centre des services sociaux de Montréal.)

Dans le contexte de l'adoption internationale, «adoption d'un grand enfant» désigne celle d'un enfant âgé de 6 ou 7 ans et plus. Dans le cas des enfants dont l'âge se situe entre 2 et 6 ans, on parle simplement «d'enfant». En anglais, "older child adoption" s'oppose à "infant adoption".
