... Doug Engelbart started work in 1962 on his Augment project, developing computer tools to augment human capabilities and productivity. This project was the first major work in areas like office automation and text processing .... One part of the augment project was NLS (for oN-Line System), which had several hypertext features even though it was not developed as a hypertext system. During the augment project, the researchers stored all their papers, reports, and memos in a shared "journal" facility that enabled them to include cross-references to other work in their own writings. This journal grew to over 100,000 items and is still unique as a hypertext structure for support of real work over an extended time.

... Douglas Engelbart .... En 1963, il publie un article retentissant : «Un cadre conceptuel pour l'accroissement de l'intellect humain» («A Conceptual Framework for the Augmentation of Man's Intellect»). Le projet AUGMENT le conduit à proposer NLS (oN Line System, «Système en ligne»), un dispositif expérimental destiné aux chercheurs pour l'archivage de leurs articles, essais et rapports, dans une espèce de «revue», que tous pouvaient lire et compléter par des références croisées entre les documents. Il envisage que chacun «emmagasine électroniquement ses spécifications, plans, projets, programmes, documentation, rapports, mémos, bibliographies et fiches ... et fasse toutes ses esquisses, ses prévisions, ses ébauches, ses débogages... et une bonne partie de ses échanges avec les autres à partir de ses consoles». NLS n'est pas un véritable hypertexte, mais il en possède certaines caractéristiques.
