English

Subject field(s)
  • Chemical Elements and Compounds
  • Agricultural Chemicals
  • Crop Protection
  • Pollutants
DEF

A compound in which an atom of chlorine is bound to an organic radical.

CONT

Two serious disadvantages about the early organochlorines such as D.D.T. were that they were concentrated in certain tissues of the bodies of successive predators.

OBS

"Organochlorine" may be used to designate an "organochlorine compound", an "organochlorine insecticide", an "organochlorine pesticide", an "organochlorine product", etc.

DEF

Record 2 2011-07-25

English

Subject field(s)
  • Crop Protection
  • Agricultural Chemicals
  • Chemical Elements and Compounds
  • Pollutants
OBS

organochlorines: A family of insecticides [which includes] nearly all of the "hard", persistent insecticides - those that do not break down quickly in the environment and are passed along the food chains of various species, including man.

OBS

Organochlorines include the best known of all the synthetic poisons: endrin, heptachlor, aldrin, toxaphene, dieldrin, lindane, DDT, chlordane, and methoxychlor.

OBS

The term "organo-chlorine insecticide" is modelled on "organo-chlorine pesticide" found in source GILEN (Dictionary of environmental terms by Alan Gilpin), 1976, p. 24. This written form, however, is rarely used.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Protection des végétaux
  • Agents chimiques (Agriculture)
  • Éléments et composés chimiques
  • Agents de pollution
DEF

Record 3 2003-11-17

English

Subject field(s)
  • Chemical Elements and Compounds
  • Pulp Preparation (papermaking)
DEF

An organic compound with one or more chlorine atoms.

CONT

[Pesticides] can be divided into four classes: Organo-chlorinated compounds, which are very difficult to hydrolyse; the most common are: D.D.T., lindane, HCH, dieldrin, aldrin, endrin, chlordane and heptachlor, all of which are used as insecticides ...

CONT

Many pulp and paper mills produce a chemical "cocktail" of chlorinated organic compounds including dioxins, which can have chronic long-term effects on marine creatures.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Éléments et composés chimiques
  • Préparation de la pâte à papier
DEF

English

Subject field(s)
  • Chemical Elements and Compounds
  • Agricultural Chemicals
  • Crop Protection
DEF

Of, relating to, or belonging to the chlorinated hydrocarbon pesticides ...

CONT

The gradual decline in the use of organochlorine pesticides has allowed predatory birds to re-establish themselves.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Éléments et composés chimiques
  • Agents chimiques (Agriculture)
  • Protection des végétaux
