Le détecteur de photons le plus commun est le phototube. Il est constitué d’une cathode semi-cylindrique et d’une anode filiforme fixées dans une enveloppe transparente scellée sous vide. La surface concave de la cathode est recouverte d’une couche de matériel photoémetteur, tel un métal alcalin ou un oxyde métallique, qui émet des électrons lorsqu’il est irradié. Le tube photomultiplicateur est un autre type de détecteur de photon.
