Protein chemists began by studying proteins found in nature, but have only recently moved on to the problem of engineering new ones. ... Designing proteins is difficult because of the way they are constructed. As Bill DeGrado, a protein chemist at Du Pont, explains: "A characteristic of proteins is that their activities depend on their three-dimensional structures. These activities may range from hormonal action to a function in digestion or in metabolism. Whatever their function, it's always essential to have a definite three-dimensional shape or structure."
