Le classement est obtenu par la prise en compte des résultats dans l'ensemble des nombreux tournois dits «du Grand Prix», donnant un certain nombre de points selon le parcours effectué. Il est constamment mis à jour, les résultats d'un tournoi annulant ceux du même tournoi l'année précédente. L'ensemble des résultats d'une année couronne le meilleur joueur et la meilleure joueuse (les nos 1) mondiaux. Ces classements sont établis pour les hommes par l'A.T.P.
