Un premier sujet de préoccupation pour les climatologistes est l'accroissement des rejets de CO2 résultant des activités humaines, et par suite, l'augmentation à caractère exponentiel du taux d'accumulation de ce gaz dans la basse atmosphère.

OBS

Le carbone rejeté dans l'atmosphère y est présent sous forme de gaz carbonique (CO2). En général, les termes «rejet» et «émission» sont utilisés comme des synonymes. Cependant, on les retrouve parfois en opposition dans certains textes; le terme «rejet» prend alors le sens spécifique de corps émis par une cheminée, par une tubulure , suite à une activité humaine; le terme «émission» demeure quant à lui un terme générique désignant autant les rejets que les autres formes involontaires d'émissions.
