Le robot-pompiste de BMW répond d'abord à un impératif de sécurité. [parce que] les futurs carburants seront [...] hautement explosifs [...] Le conducteur n'aura [...] qu'à insérer une carte à puce dans un lecteur et à composer les chiffres de son code personnel. La carte indique au robot le type du véhicule, la position du réservoir et le carburant qu'il convient de servir. Guidé par deux lasers, le robot déploie son bras, ouvre le réservoir, y connecte un dispositif cylindrique, introduit le nez de la pompe et remplit le réservoir. Puis il effectue les opérations inverses et se trouve prêt à servir le client suivant. L'opération aura duré de deux à quatre minutes.
