Carne et Cathro (1982) ont proposé le terme «sedex» comme acronyme de l'expression anglaise «sedimentary exhalative» qui fait référence au processus génétique (exhalaison de fluides) et à la nature (sédimentaire) des roches encaissantes d'une certaine catégorie de gîtes. Cet acronyme anglais consacré par l'usage est une façon courte et pratique de désigner cette catégorie de gîtes appelés de diverses façons : «gîtes stratiformes de Zn-Pb dans des roches sédimentaires», «gîtes encaissés dans des shales» ou «gîtes exhalatifs sédimentaires».
