Les aciers à 17% de chrome classiques sont couramment appelés aciers semi-ferritiques: avec leur teneur en carbone habituelle de l'ordre de 0,06% ils possèdent un point de transformation au chauffage, et, par refroidissement à partir d'une température supérieure à ce point de transformation, leur structure est biphasée, c'est-à-dire qu'elle contient environ 20% de martensite, dans la structure ferritique, distribuée le plus souvent le long des joints de grain.
