A short-leg cylinder cast with ankle hinges and heel cup is used for incompletely healed tibial and fibular fractures that require more time to achieve further consolidation. The principal benefit of this cast is that it permits early knee and ankle motion.

Le plâtre de Sarmiento [...] réalise une guêtre étroitement moulée au relief de la jambe [...] Son extrémité inférieure s'arrête en sus-malléolaire et est échancrée au niveau de l'Achille et en avant pour permettre les mouvements de flexion-extension de la tibio-tarsienne. Elle est prolongée par une coque talonnière en thermoplastique à laquelle elle est solidarisée par deux tiges flexibles dans le sens antéro-postérieur, et qui absorbe les forces verticales.
