Dans le cadre de l'application à l'immobilisation des déchets radioactifs, on appelle béton la catégorie des liants hydrauliques composés de silicates et d'aluminates de calcium. Le plus couramment utilisé de ces composés est le ciment de Portland, retenu à cause de ses propriétés mécaniques.
