À la Librascope, filiale de Singer, un afficheur polychrome exploite la transition smectique-nématique dans un cristal liquide chauffé. Chaque cellule est associée à un filtre coloré rouge ou vert; deux cellules et deux filtres permettent de réaliser une image en rouge, vert et jaune par mixage ou en noir, les deux cellules diffusant alors la lumière. On a obtenu des images colorées de haute résolution de 2 048 X 2 048 points en chauffant très localement les deux lames de cristaux liquides à l'aide d'un fin pinceau laser Yag balayant l'écran.
