Record number: 1, Textual support number: 1 DEF
The subject embracing the detailed investigation of soil composition, its classification, consolidation, and strength; the flow of water through various soils, and the active and passive pressures acting upon them. The father of soil mechanics is Dr. Karl von Terzaghi, and this new branch of science was initiated in 1936 by the First International Conference on Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering at Cambridge, Mass. 4, record 1, English, - soil%20mechanics
Record number: 1, Textual support number: 2 DEF
The scientific investigation of soils to determine their suitability as subgrades for buildings and other civil and mining works. It involves soil classification and tests to determine properties, strengths and bearing capacities. The tests enable the engineers to predict the behaviour of soils and to design foundations and works on economic lines. 5, record 1, English, - soil%20mechanics
Record number: 1, Textual support number: 3 DEF
The application of the principles of mechanics and hydraulics to engineering problems dealing with the behavior and nature of soils, sediments, and other unconsolidated accumulations of solid particles; the detailed and systematic study of the physical properties and utilization of soils, esp. in relation to highway and foundation engineering and to the study of other problems relating to soil stability. 6, record 1, English, - soil%20mechanics
Record number: 1, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Soil mechanics, another earth science ... was originated by engineers and counts many prominent names in the ranks of its workers, the best known worker in this field being Karl Terzaghi. Soil mechanics is based on physics and mechanics, particularly on the study of stresses and strains in soils. Methods of soil mechanics are gradually penetrating into geology; .... It should be emphasized that soil mechanics, besides being an earth science, is a basic engineering science. 7, record 1, English, - soil%20mechanics

Geotechnics: This term is gradually replacing the term "soil mechanics". 4, record 1, English, - soil%20mechanics
Record number: 1, Textual support number: 2 OBS
"Geotechnics", "engineering geology", "environmental geology", and "soil mechanics" (see those records) with their synonyms are closely related terms and some nearly use them as synonyms. Few or no obvious distinction between them results in ambiguity of use and risk of misunderstanding. Confronted with the situation the terminologist chose to treat them as separate concepts till their use be clarified by usage. 8, record 1, English, - soil%20mechanics

8, record 1, French, - m%C3%A9canique%20des%20sols
