Both the Golgi and the endosomes have recently been proposed as the main site of SM-synthase [sphingomyelin-synthase], the enzyme responsible for sphingomyelin (SM) biosynthesis. To settle this confusion, we studied the subcellular distribution of SM-synthase in human liver-derived HepG2 and baby hamster kidney BHK-21 cells.

La sphingomyéline (SPM) et ses dérivés ont été longtemps considérés exclusivement comme des éléments structuraux des membranes des cellules eucaryotes. La mise en évidence de l'effet antagoniste de la sphingosine vis-à-vis de la protéine kinase C par le groupe d'Hannun en 1986, a constitué la première étape d'une série de travaux qui ont identifié le rôle des sphingolipides en tant que seconds messagers.
