This is called the sunrise view because the patella appears to be rising over the horizon. This view is taken with the knee flexed. The radiograph is taken with the x-ray beam tangential to the patella parallel to the long axis of the lower extremity.

Tout d'abord le tableau clinique doit associer : douleurs sous-rotuliennes à type de brûlures souvent nocturnes, l'impression d'avoir le genou serré dans un étau, une diminution des amplitudes de flexion, un appui monopodal en flexion impossible et enfin un bilan radiologique sans équivoque avec un index rotulien égal ou inférieur à 0,6 et un aspect de «coucher de soleil» sur la vue axiale à 30 [degrés] de flexion qu'il ne faut pas confondre avec un pincement fémoro-patellaire.

An axial view of the patella, with the patient prone, the knee flexed as much as possible, and the central ray directed through the joint space between the patella and the femoral condyles. It is used to demonstrate vertical fractures of the patella, and to investigate the articulating surfaces of the femoropatellar articulation. The patient may also be placed in the supine position.
