Because fighting or fleeing (fight-or-flight response) are not considered appropriate reactions to many of the stressful situations we encounter, we try to deal with these situations in other ways. Often we may remain in the arousal stage for long periods of time - days, weeks, or months. This condition is known as a sustained stress response.
