Maladie infectieuse, contagieuse et inoculable, due à deux variétés de virus. L'une, qui n'est autre que le virus vaccinal (identique à celui de la vache, de l'homme, du cheval et du chameau) mériterait le nom de vaccine (ariola vaccina), l'autre engendrée par un autre virus, distinct du point de vue immunologique, spécifique du porc, on devrait donc réserver à cette seconde maladie le nom de variole (variola suilla). Du point de vue clinique pur, les deux infections ne se laissent pas distinguer. Leur gravité économique est peu importante.
