The placement of snow fences near buildings and the swirling action of wind around buildings results in peculiar snow drifting habits. For instance, do not attach windbreak fences directly to the front corner of an open front shed; allow for a "swirl chamber" (an offset of the fence from the building where blowing snow will accumulate away from the front of the shed).

Two current designs of air-cushioned headbox are illustrated in Figures 16-8 and 16-9. These boxes depend on the action of the rotating, perforated rolls to provide turbulence and level out velocity gradients. Shower sprays are arranged to cover the pond and sides of the box. Some older designs ... incorporate a reception chamber (also called "swirl chamber" or "explosion chamber") into which the distribution system feeds, followed by an adjustable gap or throat. The gap is important; if too large, the high velocity streams from the inlet pipes will persist; if too small, troublesome vortices (eddy currents) can be created.

Return Flow Mechanical Atomizing Oil Burners.... This is a register-type burner similar to the mechanical atomizing burners. Wide range is accomplished by use of a return-flow nozzle which has a swirl chamber just ahead of the orifice or sprayer plate. Good atomization is attained by maintaining a high rate of oil flow and high pressure drop through the swirl chamber. The excess oil above the load demand is returned from the swirl chamber to the oil storage tank or to the oil pump suction. Control of burning rate is accomplished by varying the oil pressure in both the oil inlet and the oil return lines.
