Les stations météorologiques ne notent pas seulement le type de nuage mais également la nébulosité ou le rapport entre la partie du ciel couverte et l'ensemble de la voûte céleste. Ce rapport se note en dixièmes ou en octas de 1 à 8.

OBS

En Amérique du Nord, on utilise, parallèlement aux dixièmes de surface, une autre unité de nébulosité : l'octa qui vaut un huitième de la surface de la voûte céleste. Il existe un système de conversion qui permet de passer d'une unité à l'autre.
