Un réseau de drainage souterrain est constitué de canalisations de faible diamètre intérieur (5 à 6 cm), disposées suivant des files parallèles et qui sont désignées sous le terme générique de drains ; ils recueillent directement l'eau du sol et débouchent dans des tuyaux de diamètre plus important, ou collecteurs. Ceux-ci se déversent les uns dans les autres, et le dernier, le collecteur principal, se jette dans un fossé, un canal, un ruisseau ou une rivière, qui constitue l'émissaire du réseau de drainage ; la jonction du collecteur principal avec l'émissaire s'effectue par un ouvrage qu'on appelle la bouche du réseau.
